The Millennium Falcon Models
32 Incher : Part maps / List of kits / Blueprints
So, you want a Falcon....
Three models of the Millennium Falcon were used to make the classic Star Wars movies. A large model, measuring about five feet in length, was made for A New Hope . A smaller Falcon measuring about 32 inches in length, and another one only a couple inches long, were built for The Empire Strikes Back. The large A New Hope model was also used, although modified, for close-up shots, like the arrival of the Falcon at Bespin (two landing gear compartments were added under the five footer). All of the above mentioned models were used in The Return of the Jedi and no Falcons were made specifically for this movie.
Both the 32 inch and the 5 foot versions (as well as al the other ships used in these movies) were created using a technique called Kitbashing . For those of you who may new at this, Kitbashing involves getting a whole bunch of commercially available (or more often than not, absolutely unavailable) kits and sticking bits and pieces of them all over the ship, making it very detailed and interesting to look at.
This is where the fun begins ! You, want a Falcon, I presume, why else would you be here, so you've got three options:
- 1) You build an Ertl , AMT or MPC kit. Easy, inexpensive...............and lousy. Extreme care has been taken so that every single detail on those is wrong, and someone actually went through the trouble to double check all the dimensions and make sure that not one of them was correct.
- 2) You try winning it from Han....................Hmmm...............
- 3) You make your own.
In order to make your own (and I suggest this method), well, you've got to reverse engineer the kit bashing process, i.e.. you go out and try to identify all the parts, from all the kits, that they used on the original model. Then, you stick them in all the correct places onto your basic shape, that has all the correct dimensions and, Voila! You've got a Falcon of your own.
Simple, huh !............................. NOT !!!
